Softball goes 2-0 on Day 1 at FCSAA State Tournament

OCALA--The College of Central Florida softball team went 2-0 on opening day of the 2017 FCSAA State Softball Tournament at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Fla.

FCSAA No. 4/NJCAA No. 9 Lady Patriots made a statement in game 1, run-ruling Miami Dade College 12-0 in five innings. CF held a 4-0 record against the Sharks this season, run-ruling MDC in three of the four meetings.

FCSAA Pitcher of the Week Morgan Cushman, who ranks No. 2 in the state in overall wins, led the Patriots in the circle throwing a complete-game shutout. She allowed just two hits and struck out five in the win.

At the plate, Brooke Barlow (2-for-2, 4 RBI, 2 RS), Jenna Rodelo (3-for-3, 3 RBI, RS) and Melinda Rule (3-for-3, 2 RBI) combined for a tournament-high three home runs in the opening round. Kelsee Cullop (3-for-4, RS), Tiffani Railey (3-for-3, 2 RBI, 3 RS) and Caeley Nix (2-for-3, 3 RS) were also key contributors at the plate.
Game two set up a match up between two of the best teams in the state and nation with NJCAA No. 3 Chipola College and CF.

The defending national champions started one of the top pitchers in the state and nation in Krystal Goodman. Goodman entered the game with a 0.65 ERA, good for Top 3 in the state and nation.

CF countered with an ace of their own—Shayne O'Connell. O'Connell ranks No. 4 in the state with a 1.20 ERA and 158 strikeouts.

The pitching duel didn't disappoint, with O'Connell throwing a complete-game shutout to lead CF past the Indians 1-0. She allowed just three hits and struck out five in the win.

CF scored its lone run of the game in the top of the second off an error by Chipola catcher Marta Gasparotto. A pair of singles by Rodelo and Destinee Lizzmore and a Joanna Muldoon walk loaded the bases for CF. A batter later, pinch runner Marcella Parrado scored off of Gasparotto's error during Hannah Kelly's at-bat.

CF will face FCSAA No.2/NJCAA No. 4 Florida Southwestern State College at Noon.
