OCALA--College of Central Florida softball swept Lake-Sumter State College 14-8, 15-2 on Wednesday afternoon in Leesburg.
The Lady Patriots (31-6), ranked No. 4 in the state and nation, got off to a slow start in game one. CF trailed the LakeHawks 4-1 after four innings before plating seven runs in the top of the fifth off singles from Hannah Kelly, Karly Krueg, Brooke Barlow, Tiffani Railey and Destinee Lizzmore. Katie Peters also hit a grounder to second base, causing an error to drive in an additional two runs before closing out the top half of the fifth.
CF scored six more insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings to close out LSSC.
Morgan Cushman pitched five complete, allowing six runs on 10 hits and striking out four.
Lizzmore (2-for-4), who leads the state in RBIs, and Railey (3-for-3) led CF at the plate. Other key contributors include: Barlow (2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 RS), Krueg (5-for-5, RBI, 3 RS), Caeley Nix (4-for-5, RBI, 2RS), and Claudia Jones (3-for-4, 2 RS).
CF didn't waste any time in game two to get out to an early lead.
The Lady Patriots struck first in the second inning with a groundout RBI by Jenna Rodelo. An inning later, CF would explode for 11 runs, including a two-run homer by Railey.
Rodelo led the offensive charge, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs score and a home run. Barlow (2-for-4, 3 RBI, RS), Railey (1-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 RS, HR), Nix (1-for-3, 2 RBI, RS) and Lizzmore (2-for-3, RBI, RS) backed Rodelo at the plate as the Lady Patriots combined for 17 hits.
In the circle, Lindsay Markham pitched five, complete innings, allowing just two runs on five hits and struck out six.
On the day, Railey (4-for-6, 4 RS) and Barlow (4-for-9, 4 RS) each drove in five runs, while Lizzmore (4-for-7, 3 RS) plated four, and Nix (5-for-8, 3 RS) had three RBIs as the Lady Patriots combined for 39 hits on the day.
With the win, CF moved to 4-0 in Mid-Florida Conference play.
CF will be back in action on Thursday as they host St. Johns River State College for a conference doubleheader at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
