Softball splits with SCF, O'Connell throws no-hitter

OCALA--The College of Central Florida softball team split a doubleheader with State College of Florida on Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Patriots rolled in the first game behind freshman pitcher Shayne O'Connell who recorded her first no-hitter as a Patriot.

Hannah Kelly started things off with a solo home run in the bottom of the first. CF would go on to add two more insurance runs in the fourth inning to win it 3-0. 

Kelly led CF at the plate going 1-for-2 with two runs scored and driving in one. Karli Woolington and Karly Kreug also drove in a run in the win.

In the circle, O'Connell struck out nine in the complete-game shutout.

Game two of the doubleheader was a back-and-forth, scoreless affair until CF struck first. Shelbee Blackburn sent a line drive into center field, scoring Claudia Jones, for their only run of the day.

SCF would answer back with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to secure a 3-1 victory over CF.

Blackburn (1-for-3, RBI) and Jones (1-for-2, run scored) paced CF at the plate. In the cirlcle, freshman Morgan Cushman got the start. She allowed three runs on four hits and struck out three in the loss

CF will be back in action on Saturday when they host Miami Dade College for a doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m.
