CF Softball sweeps HCC

OCALA-The College of Central Florida softball team swept Hillsborough Community College 5-3 and 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at home.

The Patriots, ranked No. 1 in the nation, improved to 30-4 on the season.

In the opener, Taylor Morrow singled in Mariah Wise with the go-ahead run in a two-run eighth inning.

From there, Holly McKinnon shut the door for the Patriots with her prowess in the circle.

CF then jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second game, before it held off a rally by the Hawks, who scored twice in the seventh.

McKinnon earned the win in the opener after allowing three runs on nine hits in seven innings. She walked three and struck out nine.

Hanners followed that up by not allowing an earned run in seven innings on six hits. She walked two and struck out four.

At the plate, Wise (3-for-7, three runs scored), Sarah Heimbach (two runs scored) and Morrow (3-for-7, two RBI, run scored) led the way over the course of the doubleheader.

Hanners smacked a solo homer in the opener, while Lindsay O'Steen and Cheyenne Blaha drove in runs.

In the second game, Morrow was the only CF player to have multiple hits, while Edrienne Williams and Kylie Holton finished with doubles.

CF will now turn its attention to rival Santa Fe on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in Gainesville.

The Patriots have never defeated the Saints in Gainesville during the coach Chris Ahern era.

Last year, CF knocked off Santa Fe in the FCSAA State Tournament on its way to the Atlantic District Championship.
