Softball sweeps No. 2 Indian River

OCALA-The College of Central Florida softball team made a huge statement in a matchup of teams ranked among the top five in the nation on Tuesday.

The NJCAA No. 2 Patriots (23-2) earned a pair of 10-2, five-inning routs of No. 5 Indian River State at home.

In the opener, CF crushed four home runs and used strong pitching from Autumn Hanners, before Holly McKinnon followed up with a dominant effort in another rout of the Pioneers (20-4).

Hanners scattered five in five innings of work in a game that saw the Patriots score three times in the first inning.  CF added four runs in the third and three more in the fourth in the rout.

Sarah Heimbach had a grand slam in the opener, while Hanners (1-for-2, two runs scored, three RBI) bashed a three-homer for CF.

Cheyenne Blaha (2-for-2, two runs scored, RBI) and Taylor Morrow (1-for-3, two runs scored, two RBI) also homered for the Patriots, who have won the last three meetings with IRSC dating back to last season.

Jordan Lane (2-for-3, run scored), Rebecca Enter (1-for-2, run scored), Linday O'Steen (run scored) and Mariah Wise (1-for-3) were also key contributors in the opener.

From there, McKinnon struck out six and allowed one earned run on three hits to spark CF.

After the teams were tied at 1 after the first inning, CF blew things open with six runs in the second.

Wise (RBI), Blaha (2-for-4, run scored, two RBI, double), O'Steen (2-for-2, two RBI, run scored, home run), Morrow (1-for-3, RBI), Hanners (1-for-2, run scored), Kylie Holton (2-for-3, run scored), Lane (two runs scored), Deeandreaya Davis (1-for-2, two runs scored, RBI) and Heimbach (1-for-2, two runs scored) led the offensive onslaught in the second game.

CF visits Hillsborough Community College on Thursday at 4 p.m.
