Lady Patriots sweep St. Johns, secure second place finish in MFC

PALATKA- The College of Central Florida softball team finished off its best-ever Mid-Florida Conference finish in school history with a sweep of St. Johns River State.

The Patriots (37-12, 18-6) earned wins of 9-1 and 11-1 over the Vikings and finished second place in the MFC.

Lindsay O'Steen had an strong doubleheader, going 6-for-7 with two doubles a home run, four RBI and three runs scored. O'Steen was 4-for-4 in the second game with two doubles and three runs scored.

In the opener, Autumn Hanners (2-for-2, home run, two RBI), Jordan Lane (1-for-2, home run, two RBI) backed O'Steen at the plate. 

Jamie Nelson (13-2) earned the win in the circle after she allowed just two hits in four innings.

From there, CF was paced by O'Steen, Lizzy Burchfield (2-for-3), Lane (3-for-4, two RBI) and Amy Szymanowski (1-for-2, home run) in the second game. For Szymanowski, it was her school record 18th home run of the season and extended her school career mark to 34. 

Taylor Bowen (17-6) earned her 35th career win, as she allowed just one run on three hits in five innings of work. Bowen added seven strikeouts in the win.

CF finished the season with 10 home runs in four games against the Vikings and have won 10 straight against SJRSC overall. 

The Patriots missed a chance to clinch a tie for the conference title, as Santa Fe (32-19, 19-5) swept Lake Sumter (24-33, 8-16) 10-2 and 4-2 on the road for its ninth MFC title in 10 years. 

SFC is locked into a first round game in the Atlantic District Tournament against Lake Sumter on May 2, while the Patriots will take on the third-place team from the Southern Conference, which will most likely be Eastern Florida State.
