CF Softball blanks Lake Sumter, hits 6 home runs

Ocala, FL-- The College of Central Florida softball team capped off an impressive week with a pair of routs over Lake Sumter State on Sunday afternoon.

The Patriots (29-10, 10-4) rolled to five-inning mercy rule wins of 13-0 and 14-0 over the Lake Hawks (21-24, 6-8) at home.

CF finished off the week at 4-0 and outscored its opponents 45-0 in the process.

In addition to its strong offensive output, the Patriots' pitching staff hasn't allowed a run over their last 26 1/3 innings of work.

Taylor Bowen (13-5) extended her home scoreless streak against Mid-Florida Conference opponents to 21 innings with four innings of three-hit work. She walked one and struck out five.

She had plenty of help, as Amy Szymanowski blasted a pair of home runs and finished 3 for 3 with three runs scored and six RBI.

Szymanowski now has 12 homers on the season and extended her school record for home runs in a career to 28.

Alora Thompson, Nicole White and Jamie Summers added consecutive home runs for the Patriots in the opener, as they pounded out 17 hits.

Cheyenne Blaha (3 for 3, three runs scored, triple), Lizzy Burchfield (2 for 4, two runs scored, RBI), Autumn Hanners (2 for 3, double, RBI) and Lindsay O'Steen (1 for 2, double, run scored, RBI) paced CF in the opener.

In second game, Jamie Nelson (9-1) tossed four scoreless innings and allowed just two hits and walked one.

Nelson fanned three, before Hanners finished up with her second scoreless one-inning relief outing of the day.

CF scored nine runs in the first inning and was led in the second game by Blaha (1 for 1, two runs scored, solo homer), O'Steen (2 for 3, two runs scored, two RBI, double), Hanners (1 for 2, run scored, two RBI), double) and Jordan Lane (2 for 3, two runs scored, two doubles).

Szymanowski, meanwhile, finished the doubleheader 3 for 3 with four runs scored and seven RBI. She reached base in five of her six plate appearances and has now homered seven times in her last eight games.

CF, which entered the game fifth in the nation in total homers, upped its total to 48 on the season and pounded out 15 extra-base hits in the doubleheader sweep.

After falling behind 8-0 in the opening inning of a three-run loss to the LakeHawks, the Patriots outscored LSSC 46-0 over the next 22 innings.
