CF Softball splits with Manatee

Ocala, FL-- The College of Central Florida's pitching staff started off with 13 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings on Tuesday afternoon, but the hosts couldn't come away with a sweep of State College of Florida-Manatee.

After getting a complete-game six hitter in the opener from Autumn Hanners in a 6-0 win, the Patriots (5-2) wasted a solid outing from Taylor Bowen in a 2-0 defeat in the nightcap.

Bowen, who struck out eight, had retired 13 batters in a row, before allowing back-to-back solo homers by Jaice Metherall and Kat Penn with two outs in the top of the seventh inning.

CF, which managed just a single by Taylor Morrow in the second game, was unable to rally against SCF pitcher Taylor O'Quinn, who recorded 18 of 21 outs via pop-ups or outfield fly outs.

The Patriots got off to a good start in the opener, as Jordan Lane's two-run double in the first got them going.

Hanners helped her cause with a solo homer in the fourth and Cheyenne Blaha capped a 3-for-4 day with a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Lizzy Burchfield (1-for-3, two runs scored), Morrow (1-for-3, RBI, run scored), Jessica Nathan (2-for-3, run scored) led the way at the plate for CF.

Nathan reached base twice on walks during the nightcap, but the Patriots' best chance to score with two-on and one-out in the sixth came up empty.

Bowen allowed just four hits in seven innings and struck out eight. She didn't walk a batter in the loss.

Prior to the consecutive homers, the Manatees (2-2) hadn't recorded a hit against Bowen since the third inning.
