Ocala, FL-- The College of Central Florida softball split a pair of games with Lake Sumter State in a Mid-Florida Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon in Leesburg.
The Patriots (23-8, 4-2) held the LakeHawks scoreless over the final 11 innings of the doubleheader, but were done in by an eight-run first inning in the opener, which led to an 8-5 loss.
CF, which committed six errors in the first inning, r...allied for a 14-0 rout in the second game over LSSC (18-15, 3-1).
Taylor Bowen (10-4) struck out seven and earned the shutout win in five innings with a three-hitter in the second game. It was the third shutout in four starts this week for Bowen, who took the loss in the opener.
Jamie Nelson pitched six solid innings in relief with three strikeouts in the first game, which helped the Patriots battle back.
Amy Szymanowski hit her fifth homer of the season and 21st of her career in the opener and finished 2 for 3 with two RBI.
Lizzy Burchfield (2 for 3, RBI) and Taylor Morrow (2 for 3) also had solid efforts in the first game for CF.
In the second game, Szymanowski (2 for 2, two walks), Cheyenne Blaha (home run, three RBI), Jordan Lane (home run, two RBI), Lindsay O'Steen (2 for 3) and Morrow (2 for 3) led the Patriots at the plate.
CF visits rival Santa Fe on Thursday afternoon.
