Pats Walk Off Sharks in 6-5 Win

The College of Central Florida Patriots (9-4, 2-1) defeated the Miami-Dade College Sharks (8-8, 1-2) in dramatic fashion when Cole Bullen (University of Florida commit) drove home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning with a sacrifice fly to right field, easily scoring Logan Chapman and giving the Patriots the walk-off win 6-5. The win enabled CF to take the opening Citrus Conference series two games to one.

Most of the scoring was done in the first inning by both teams. The Sharks were able to score three times in the top of the first inning, all with two outs. A wild pitch scored Michael Petite, then an error scored two more to give MDC the early lead 3-0. The Patriots would respond immediately in their half of the first, again scoring all the runs with two outs. Chapman doubled home two runs and the very next batter, Armando Guirola, belted his third home run of the season to make it 4-3 Patriots.

CF would make it a 5-3 game in the third inning on a Cooper Jones infield single that scored Guirola, who reached with a walk. After a David Zamora rbi single made it a 5-4 game, there would be no more scoring until the dramatic ninth inning.

Miami-Dade tied the game at 5-5 when Geremy Garcia grounded out to score Petite, who led off the inning with a walk. In the bottom of the ninth, Chapman walked, Anthony Diaz had a bunt single, and Gunnett Carlson walked before Bullen hit his game winning sacrifice fly.

Austin Eppley started on the hill for the Patriots and went four innings, allowing four hits, four runs, and striking out four. Karson Lindsey would hold the Sharks to zero runs over the next three innings, only giving up one hit and striking out two. Jack Garvey made his season debut with 0.2 innings with a strike out. Luke Ridley (1-0) would get the win when he went the last 1.1 innings, allowing only one hit, one unearned run, and striking out two.

The Patriots will hit the road to Tallahassee on Monday for a 5 PM game against Tallahassee Community College. CF's next conference series will be against Eastern Florida State College with a home game on Thursday, February 22, 3 PM and then a doubleheader in Melbourne at EFSC, starting at 1 PM.
