Hawks Spoil Patriots Home Opener

The Hillsborough Community College Hawks fought their way to a 9-5 win over the College of Central Florida Patriots in the Pats home opener on Monday. The win improved the Hawks to 2-1 on the season.
The Patriots fell to 1-3.


The Pats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning when Jared Evans, Edrick Felix, and Kevin Kilpatrick all had RBI singles. The Hawks quickly answered with three runs of their own in the top of the third inning when Jacob Griffith drove home two runs with a single to left field. The game was tied two batters later when Dillon Besnier singled home Griffith.


Hillsborough broke the game wide open in the sixth inning by scoring six runs on two hit batters, RBI singles by Landen Morrison and Joshua Bostick, an error by Felix, and a three-run home run from Josean Sanchez.


The Patriots could only muster two more runs the rest of the way on run scoring singles by Victor Castillo in the seventh inning and Landon Ginn in the eighth inning to make the final 9-5.


Austin Teel (1-0) got the win in relief for the Hawks with 2 innings pitched allowing only one hit and striking out five. Ty Moody (0-1) took the loss giving up five runs in his 1.1 innings pitched while striking out three.


Felix was the leading hitter for the Patriots going 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Caleb Cali and Ginn each had two hits.


The Patriots go on the road Wednesday, February 2nd when they will face Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne. First pitch is 4 PM. Follow live stats and video on the New GameChanger App. CF returns home on Friday, February 4th when they host South Florida State College at 1 PM.
