MATA THROWS COMPLETE GAME TO LEAD #CFBASEBALL PAST ST. PETE

OCALA-- The College of Central Florida sophomore right-handed pitcher David Mata threw a complete game to help lead the Patriots past St. Petersburg College 12-2 on Monday afternoon in Clearwater. CF improves to 9-1 with the win.

CF struck first in the top of the second inning off a double to center by frehsman center fielder Carlos Salaverria. A batter later, right fielder Tariq Bacon reached on an error by St. Petersburg first baseman Mike Zawol to score Salaverria.

The Patriots plated three more runs in the fourth and sixth innings to pull ahead 5-0 before SPC drove in its only two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.

It was all CF from there as the Patriots capitalized off the Titans' five errors to score two runs in the seventh and eighth innings and an additional three runs in the ninth. The Patriot offense finished the day with 16 total hits in the rout, with six different CF players driving in runs.

Salaverria (3-for-5, 2 runs scored), Bacon, Nolan Machibroda and Christian Rivera drove in two runs each, while John Fiorenza and Tristan Rodriguez also drove in a run. Second baseman Myles Colangelo finished the day 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

Mata (2-0) kept the Titan offense at bay, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out eight in his complete-game win.

The Patriots will return to the field on Wednesday when it hosts FCSAA No. 3 State College of Florida-Manatee at 2:30 p.m. CF defeated the Manatees 10-4 a week ago in Bradenton.
