OCALA-- The College of Central Florida baseball team run-ruled Lake-Sumter State College 14-4 (6 innings) on Saturday afternoon at Goodlett Field to improve to 11-5 in conference play.
CF (23-12-1) entered the bottom of the fifth inning tied 4-4 with the LakeHawks. A bases-load walk and a LSSC error broke the tie before Marcus Judd blasted a grand slam over the left field wall to put the Patriots ahead 10-4. Two batters later, Christian Smallwood hit a two-run bomb for his state-leading 13th homer of the season to finish off an eight-run fifth inning.
Reliever Franklin Hernandez needed just seven pitches to retire the side in the top of the sixth before the Patriots plated two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to complete the run-rule.
Judd finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate with five RBI and two runs scored, while Smallwood (2-for-4) and Yorvis Torrealba (3-for-3) each drove in two runs in the win.
On the mound, starter Mark Potter allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out six in five innings of work to record his sixth win of the season.
CF will head on the road to Leesburg on Monday for game two of the series with Lake-Sumter.
