
OCALA-- The College of Central Florida baseball team powered past South Florida State College on Friday afternoon in Avon Park.
The Patriots blasted six home runs and recorded 24 hits in the 20-6 rout of the Panthers.
With the win, CF improves to 5-4 on the season and 2-0 against South Florida this year.
Luis Medina got the scoring going with a two-run homer in the first inning, before the Patriots exploded for nine runs in the second inning.
A pair of singles from Blake Marabell and Medina and a pair of doubles from Christian Smallwood and Zach West quickly put CF up 8-0 in the second inning. Then, Tanner May and Marabell, his second at-bat of the inning, connected for back-to-back home runs to increase CF's lead to 11-0 after two innings.
Smallwood hit a solo home run in the third inning before the Patriots continued the scoring onslaught with six runs in the fourth.
Medina led off the fourth with his second homer of the game. Smallwood and May singled to put two on with two out in the third. Marabell singled in Smallwood and a batter later, Matt Moclair was walked to set up a two-out, bases loaded situation for Yorvis Torrealba, who blasted a grand slam over the center field wall to put the Patriots up 18-4.
CF added two additional insurance runs in the top of the ninth before closing out the game.
Medina (5-for-7, 2 home runs, 3 runs scored) and Torrealba (2-for-5, grand slam, 2 runs scored) finished the day with five runs batted in each. Medina currently leads the state in total home runs (6) and runs batted in (19).
Marabell (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 3 runs scored), May (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 3 runs scored), Smallwood (4-for-6, 2 RBI, 3 runs scored), and West (2 RBI) also had monster days at the plate.
Hunter Bowling allowed three runs on one hit and walked five before giving way to reliever Josh Harper, who allowed just one run on two hits in four innings to collect his first win of the season.
CF close out its road tour at Eastern Florida State College on Saturday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
