CF Softball Wins Opening Game of State Tournament 4-1 Over Indian River State

The #3 state ranked Patriots matched up with the #5 state ranked Indian River State Pioneers in game one of the double elimination state tournament in Clermont, FL at Legends Way Ballfields. The Pioneers finished second in the Southern Conference behind state ranked #1 Florida SouthWestern.

The night game was a pitchers duel until the bottom of the 5th when CF pushed accross two runs. Patriot lead of hitter Gianna Guerriero singled and was sacrificed to second by Loftis. Brooke Roberts was walked and then Hannah Meyer singled to right to drive in Guerriro. Roberts was caught in between home and third after the throw and managed to slide under the tag at home to score the second run.

In the bottom of the 6th the Patriots added two more insurance runs. Cameron Wolfenden singled and Avery Lawson doubled before Gianna Guerriero drove them both in with a single to right field.

The Pioneers threatened in the top of the 7th, loading the bases and scoring one on a hit by pitch. CF starter Haley Guffey was able to get out of the jam with a ground ball to shortstop Brooke Roberts who got the force out at home and the final batter lined out to Loftis in right. Guffey threw a complete game 7 innings allowing only the one run on three hits and two walks while striking out nine Pioneers.

The Patriots advance to the second round of the winner's bracket and will play another state ranked team in Northwest Florida (#2) at 7 pm again in Clermont, FL.
